Marks and Spencer

Brief:

MAC has been appointed on a multi-year Marks and Spencer framework to provide Cost and Project Management and Construction Design Management (DDM) and Principal Designer services on various commissions including new full line stores, new Simply Food stores, trial specification stores, multi-store roll-out programmes and reactive and planned maintenance nationally.

The value of projects ranges from £50,000 for a fast pace roll-out project to a nine-month, £18,000,000 full refurbishment of an existing store in Manchester.

Key project:

MAC oversaw the quantity surveying of a £18m refurbishment of Marks and Spencer’s existing flagship store in Manchester city centre including new trial initiatives and specifications to improve the retail environment and navigation of the clothing, home and food hall areas.

This included the implementation of new store offerings such as clothing alteration, a click and collect service area, a customer café in new location, hot food offering including a pizza oven to help drive footfall across these areas.

This involved our Safety, Health and Environment team handle all aspects of the fire risk safety management programme.

Key challenges:

Due to this being a trial store project, several aspects of design and specification where still in development during the project.  This meant that MAC had to put in place a stringent change control process to manage the volume of change.

Key results:

MAC successfully delivered this project to a high quality and to budget in nine months despite numerous design changes throughout the construction of the project.

MAC has since been appointed on four more ‘renewal’ stores due to the team’s success at the Manchester site.
